MICE  

  • Small slender bodies
  • Weighing from 1/2 to 1 oz. as an adult
  • Ears are large; tail is semi-naked and long
  • Fur is dark gray or back and light gray on the belly, many color variations
  • Gestation period of about 19 days 
  • Females produce 4 to 7 pups per litter 
  • Weaned by 3rd or 4th week 
  • Sexually mature within 6 - 8 weeks  
  • Produce about 8 liters in a life time 
  • Life span typically less than a year
  • Territory 10 to 30 feet from the nest
  • Feeding peaks during night
  • PIles of droppings and strong "mousy" odor identify the location of favorite feeding spots

RATS

  • Stocky body
  • Weighting from 12 to 16 oz.
  • Body fur is coarse, ranges from reddish to grayish brown with buff-white underparts, many variations exist
  • Nose is blunt, ears are small and close-set
  • Tail is scaly, semi-naked and shorter than head and body
  • Breeding peaks in spring and fall
  • Gestation period of about 22 days
  • Eyes open in 9-14 days
  • Weaned 10-15 days later
  • Sexual maturity at 12 weeks, may be as early as 8 weeks
  • 4 to 7 litters per year 
  • Cannot survive long without water
  • Nocturnal - peak activity at dusk and before dawn
